Information about Private Health Insurance

Federal law allows people up to the age of 26 to stay on their parent’s plans. Employer insurance plans are therefore required to offer coverage up to age 26 for all dependents.

Many adults receive health insurance from their employer as part of a group insurance plan. Similar plans exist for college students.

Individuals can purchase health insurance on their own. A health insurance exchange is an online marketplace for people to find the best insurance plan to fit their needs.

COBRA is an option for people to prevent them from suddenly losing their insurance. Many people use COBRA when they have a change in employment status and they were previously covered by an employer plan.
